Advanced Combat Techniques
Perfect Ki Pulse Timing
Visual Cue
Watch for the blue glow that appears on your character after attacking. Press R1 exactly when it's brightest.
Audio Cue
Listen for the sound effect that plays after each attack sequence. Time your pulse with the sound.
Weapon Variation
Different weapons have different Ki Pulse timings. Practice with each weapon type.
Stance Dancing (Flux)
Flux is the advanced technique of switching stances during Ki Pulse for bonus stamina recovery:
- Low → Mid → High: Progressive bonuses for each stance change
- Timing: Change stance when pressing R1 for Ki Pulse
- Application: Essential for sustained pressure and long combos
- Difficulty: Requires practice but significantly improves stamina management
Burst Counters (Break)
Red Glow Attacks
When enemies glow red and charge, use Break (R2 + Circle) to:
- Massively deplete enemy Ki
- Leave them vulnerable to grapples
- Interrupt powerful attacks
- Create large damage windows
Timing Tip: Wait for the sound cue and flash. Breaking too early will miss. Breaking too late will result in taking damage.

Essential Combat Tips
Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Greedy Attacking: Don't spam attacks. Watch enemy patterns and create openings.
- ❌ Ignoring Ki Pulse: Not pulsing means half your stamina potential. Learn it early.
- ❌ No Elixir Management: Running out of elixirs mid-fight is fatal. Always stock up.
- ❌ Fighting Unprepared: Always check boss weaknesses and prepare consumables.
- ❌ Standing Still: Nioh 3 rewards constant movement. Stay mobile and aware.
Pro Combat Strategies
- ✓ Learn Attack Strings: Every enemy has patterns. Study and exploit them.
- ✓ Use Break Liberally: Red-glow attacks are free Ki damage with Break. Don't panic.
- ✓ Switch Stances: Different situations call for different stances. Adapt constantly.
- ✓ Prepare Consumables: Antidotes, talismans, and buffs turn impossible fights into manageable ones.
- ✓ Play Patiently: Nioh 3 rewards caution over aggression. One mistake can be fatal.
Boss-Specific Strategies
vs Human Bosses
Aggressive and use Break to deplete their Ki. They can be grappled when Ki is depleted.
vs Yokai Bosses
Watch for dark realm zones. Use elemental weaknesses. Purify their buffs with Purity element.
vs Large Bosses
Target weak points (usually glowing red). Use high stance for maximum damage during openings.
vs Fast Bosses
Use low stance for quick attacks. Lightning paralysis is extremely effective.
Game Systems FAQ
What is Ki Pulse and why is it important?
Ki Pulse is Nioh 3's core stamina recovery mechanic. After attacking, blue Ki residue appears. Pressing R1 at the right time recovers stamina and can be extended by switching stances (Flux). Without Ki Pulse, you will run out of stamina constantly and die.
Which stance should I use?
Low stance for fast attacks and building status effects. Mid stance for balanced combat when learning. High stance for maximum damage during enemy openings. The best players switch between all three constantly.
How do Soul Cores work?
Defeat yokai to get Soul Cores, purify them at shrines, then equip them in Yang or Yin seats. Each Soul Core provides unique yokai abilities. Different seats can give different effects, so experiment with both.
Should I play Samurai or Ninja style?
Try both! Samurai uses Ki Pulse and traditional stances - better for beginners. Ninja uses Kasumi dodge and Mikiri counter - higher skill ceiling but devastating when mastered. You can switch between styles mid-combat.
What attributes should I level first?
Level the attribute that scales with your main weapon (Sword = Heart, Spear = Constitution, etc.). Put 20-30 points into Constitution for HP regardless of build. Add secondary stats for your playstyle (Magic for onmyo, Dexterity for ninjutsu).
